BLAAUW: This name, a somewhat recent introduction from Holland, signifies ' blue,' probably from the favourite colour of the costume of the primitive bearer of it. It occurs in various forms among the magistrates of Amsterdam, and is identical with Bleau, borne by the eminent printer, the friend of Tycho Brahe, and the well-known author of some of the earliest maps. This is perhaps the only name now home by an English family that can boast of five consecutive vowels, (Bl a2u3), although a thirteenth-century orthography of Newman gives six-Nieuweman.
