This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Blackadder,' not far from the English border in Scotland. A river of that name also runs there. From the lands of Blackadder on the stream of the same name in the Merse division of Berwickshire. Blakadir de eodem in the earldom of March in 1426. Adam of Blacathathir was one of those sent to conduct the envoys with Princess Cecilia's dower to Edinburgh in 1477 (Bain, IV, 1445), and Charles Blakater had a protection and safe conduct to travel in England in 1486 (ibid., IV, 1522). Robert Blackader was bishop of Glasgow at the end of the fifteenth century. Rolland Blaykatter, tenant in the barony of Glasgow in 1521 may be the Roland Blacadyr who appears as subdean of Glasgow in 1524 (Rental; REG., 495), and Thomas Blacater was bailie of the Commendator of Coldingham in 1557 (Home, p. 206). The name was common in Lanarkshire in the sixteenth century, and the Blacaters or Blackadders of Tulliallan in Perthshire (from which they were dispossessed in 1632) were an offshoot from the Border family. Other old forms of the name are: Blacatar, Blaikater, Blaiketter, Blakatar, and Bleakader.
