Local, from a place of the name (= Black Head). The old family of Blackett of Durham and Northumberland were originally "de Black Heved" and "Blak-hed ' (Old English heafod 'head'). The Scottish Blacketts may derive from the old lands of Blakat or Blackit in Kirkcudbrightshire. Alexander Blakquhit, witness in Irvine, 1499 (Simon, 18). Adam Blackcat was burgess of Perth, 1564 (ER., XIX, p. 69). Dioniss Blackat is recorded in Perth, 1581 (Mill, Plays, p. 280), and Andro Blaikat was burgess there, 1617 (RPC., X, p. 69).
