A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

From the lands of Blackhall in the regality of Garioch, Aberdeenshire. William de Blackhall who appears on a jury of inquest retouring William de Tullidaff of Lentush and Rothmaise heir of his father in 1398 is apparently the first of the name recorded. William Blackha is recorded in Cromarty, 1407 (Fraser Mackintosh, Antiq. Notes, 2. ed., p. 216). In 1420 the Blackhalls are mentioned as of that Ilk (de eodem). William Blackhall of that Ilk had a remission in 1499 for slaughter committed by him (Trials, I, p. 100). William Blakhall succeeded his father William Blakhall as coroner and forester in the regality of Gareoche in 1547 (Refours, Aberdeen, 4). The family were hereditary coroners and foresters of the earldom of the Garioch from an early period, probably before the beginning of the fifteenth century. Early in the seventeenth century the family fell into decay and their lands and offices were acquired by the Burnetts who had intermarried with them (Catalogue Exhibition Arnchaeol. Inst., Edinburgh, 1859, p. 119). Blackhaill 1408, Blaikhall 1531, Blakhal 1467, Blakhale 1504, Blakhaw 1492.
