This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of the Black-lake,' corrupted by imitation into Blackleach. Probably the spot mentioned in a charter c. 1200 connected with property in Wilmslow parish, East Cheshire, from which district the name in most cases is undoubtedly sprung. 'Fulseha, Chorlegh, Pounale, and Morlegh, ... as far as the mid stream of the Siche, which comesfrom the Black Lache of Shadolee mosse,' &c. Mr. Earwaker adds, 'The name Black Lache or Black Lake is now applied to a large pond on Lindow Common' (East Ches.); v. Depledge and Cartledge.
