BLACKWATER: An old Aberdeenshire surname derived from the "villa de Blacwatyr" in the barony of Inverugie. Magister Walter de Blacwater, cancellarius Aberdonensi, appears as a charter witness at the end of the thirteenth century (REA., I, p. 37), and in 1317 as burgess of Aberdeen (SCM., V, p. 10). Marjory de Blackwater, spouse of Adam Pynfill, a leading burgess of Aberdeen, made a donation of land for sustentation of a chapel in the church of St. Maty of Aberdeen in 1376 (REA., I, p. 110).
