There are a number of places called Blackwell in England, from one or more of which the surname is derived. There were five Blackwells among the Cromwellian “adventurers”, one of whom obtained 5,800 acres in the barony of Ikerrin, Co. Tipperary. There were, however, Blackwell families in Ireland before that. Apart from two of the name who served in Ormond's army in 1648, we find the will of James Blackwall, a Co. Clare gentleman, proved in 1641. Another Col. Henry Blackwell, is listed in the 1659 “census” as a “titulado” in the barony of Moyarta, Co. Clare, and there have been Blackwells in the county ever since. The most notable of these was James Bartholomew Blackwell (1765-1820) who was sent from his home in Ennis to be educated in France; there he became a very distinguished officer in Napoleon's army (an interesting account of him will be found in Hayes, Biographical Dictionary of Irishmen in France).
(English) Dweller at the White or Clear Spring. [Old English blác + welle, &c.] Blackwell, Worcestershire, occurs as Blacwælle in a Latin charter of A.D. 964.
This is an English toponymic much in evidence among the Cromwellian ''adventurers", but there were families of the name settled in Co. Clare earlier in the seventeenth century. SIF 17
