(English) 1 Bleacher, Whitener. [M.E blaker(e; Old English blæcan, to whiten] Geoffrey le Blakere.— Writs of Parl.
2 the Middle English pers, name Blacer, representing an Anglo-Saxon Bláchere. [Old English blác, bright + here, army] 3 confused with Blacker, q.v.
Cotgrave defines a blacker as noircisseur. The latter word he Englishes by "blacker, blackener, bleacher," &c., thus confounding two opposite ideas, and literally "making white black." The truth is, that the Anglo-Saxon blac, unaccented, means black, while blac signifies pale or white, and the derivative verb, blacian, to bleach, or make pale. The Promptorium makes ' bleykester' and ' whytster' synonymous, and explains them by candidarius, a whitener or bleacher of linen, which is doubtless the meaning of this surname. Blacre, apparently used as a baptismal name, is found in Domesd. The Slackers of co. Armagh, derive themselves traditionally from Blacar, a Northman chief who settled at Dublin early in the X. cent. Burke's Commoners, ii. 48.
