From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A surname found in Shetland. Old forms are Blans and Blanse. The popular tradition is that the bearers of this name are descended from shipwrecked French sailors, and consequently the old forms of the surname have largely given place to Blanch and Blanche, in order to be nearer the supposed original French form. The name of Thomas Blanx in Fetlar occurs in a list of witnesses in 1575. The name is very common in the parish of Delting, and also occurs in Yell (Old Lore Misc., II, p. 138—139). Mathew Blans in Funzie is in record in 1624 (Shetland), and Thomas Blance was fined for his tax of Wig in 1633 (RPC., 2. ser. V, p. 563). The name has been also explained as the genitive of Bljan, an Old Norse personal name (Old Lore Misc., IV, p. 14). See also Blank.
