From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Though now fairly numerous in east Ulster this name was at first confined to the families of large landed proprietors in Co. Monaghan, the first of these being Sir Edward Blayney who settled there in 1598. From then till the beginning of the nineteenth century they, the Leslies and the Dawsons were the leading planter families in the county. One John Blayney was among the officers who swore to defend the city of Derry in 1689, and the name is prominent in such records as the tituladoes of 1659, hearth money rolls, the patentee officers, prerogative wills, nearly always in or near Co. Monaghan. The Blayneys, indeed, as well as becoming peers of the realm gave their name to a town -— Castleblayney.
Notwithstanding its Irish appearance the name Blaney has no Gaelic background and has not been used as an anglicized form of any indigenous Irish surname. It is now rare in Co. Monaghan and is found to-day mainly in Counties Antrim and Down.
