From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
BLAW: This surname was formerly common in Fife, but is now believed to be extinct. A family of the name were reckoned among the oldest in the Culross district. "They seem to have come originally from the Low Countries, to judge from their name, which is clearly the same as the Dutch blauw, or blue"(Beveridge, Culross and Tulliallan, II, p. 124). The Blaws are found as lairds of Castlehill, near Culross, in the middle of the sixteenth century, and James or Jacob Blaw was bailie of Culross Abbey in 1565. James Bla had feu of lands of Castlehill from the Abbey of Culross, 1587 (PSAS., LX, p. 80), and in 1686 an allowance was made to Mr. Robert Blaw for his Vocabules (grammar), 1686 (RPC., 3. ser. XII, p. 456). John Blaw is mentioned in Lanark (Dryburgh, p. 155), Thomas Blaw was dempstar of court, Aberdeen, in 1544 (CRA., p. 212), and the name appears in Edinburgh as Bla (Edinb. Marr.). John Blaw was a maker of the celebrated Culross girdles in 1635 (Sc. Ant., VI p. 114), and a daughter of this family, Margaret Blaw, married Arnchibald Primrose, ant was thus an ancestress of the earls of Rosebery. John Blaw was sent on a mission to the Young Pretender in 1745. and in 1767, during an altercation in a Clackmannan public-house, he fatally stabbed a neighboring farmer. After a trial before Lord Justice-Clerk Miller and Lord Kames he was hanged at Stirling.
