This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Blaze.' St. Blaise was the patron saint of wool-combers, and his festival (Feb. 3) till recent days was faithfully commemorated in Yorkshire. A full-sized effigy of the bishop is carved in the principal entrance to the Bradford Exchange. As a font-name Blaise, or Blaze, just managed to survive the Reformation.
