Of territorial origin from the old barony of the same name in the lordship of Lauderdale. The place name still exists as that of an extensive farm. William de Blyth, persons of Chimesyde, Berwickshire, rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 207), and in 1302 the seal of Adam de Blyth was appended to an account of goods purchased at Perth (ibid., II, p. 354). James Blyth was burgess of Dundy (Dundee) in 1485 (RHM., 1, p. 142), and William Blitht was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1488 (NSCM., I, p. 34). Andrew Blyt was admitted burgess, 1524 (ibid., p. 48). Richard Blyth represented Dundee in Parliament in 1567, Cuthbert Blyth was burgess of Edinburgh in 1563 (Laing, 757), Robert Blyth was retoured heir in land of Brounslope, Berwickshire, in 1646 (Retours, Berwicks Arne, 262), and Arnchibald Blyth appears as baxter in Dysart in 1691 (Dysart, p. 54). Blyth was a common name among the Border Gypsies, a late "Queen" being Esther Faa Blyth (d. 12th July, 1883). Blaith and Blith 1684. Other old forms of the name are Blytht and Blyithe.
