(an invented surname) At first glance this word seems to be associated with the idea of lightning and stone, but actually it is the Yiddish for “blood stone,” a mineral called hematite to which folklore ascribed all kinds of good fortune. The ancient Egyptians and Greeks and later the people of the Middle Ages believed that it would stop bleeding, and that it was an aid to longevity and the preservation of youthful vigor. In medieval France it was associated with the legend of the Wandering Jew, who was supposed to sell or give away such stones. In World War I many German soldiers wore necklaces of bloodstones for protection.
