This surname is derived from an occupation. 'the blocker,' a maker of blocks for hats, a blocker or block-hewer. Also a blocker for shoemaking. The Historical English Dictionary quotes: '1609. BLOKKER: From the occupation. Donald the blokker (Dofnaldus blokker) was one of the workmen engaged in the building of Tarbert Castle in 1326 (ER., I, p. 55). In 1302 there are entries of payments of wages to workmen employed on the Castle of Linlithgow, and among them are named bloccars or bloccarii, who appear to have had to do with the cutting and trimming of wood (Bain, IV, p. 365). This definition of blokker is not noted in the Dictionary of the older Scottish tongue.
