This surname is derived from an occupation. 'the blothunt' (v. Hunt, Boarhunt, Sec), a huntsman who exposed himself to the chief danger in attacking the wild boar, stag, or wolf . This instance of the word is three centuries earlier than the Historical English Dictionary: 'In backgammon, an exposed piece or "man," liable to be taken or forfeited...' 598. Florio, Caccia, a hunting, a chasing. ... Also ... a blot at tables'(v. Blot). Perhaps the blot-hunt went after exposed animals, i.e. wild beasts that came under range of his arrow. Anyway the name is interesting to philologists.
