This surname is derived from a nickname. 'the blonde' (v. Blunt), fair of complexion.
A variant of Blund, which see. John le Blunt of Eskeby, Dumfriesshire, rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 202). James Blunt in Dalscon, 1743, and two more of the name (Dumfries).
= Blond, q.v. Hugh le Blount.—Parl. Writs.
(English) The fair or light-complexioned man.
French blond, fair-haired, light-complexioned. The great baronial house of Blount, lords Mountjoy, deduced themselves from William, son of Blound, earl of Guisnes, one of the companions of the Conqueror, who was traditionally derived from the Biondi of Italy and the Flavii of classical Rome! It is probable that there are several families so designated from the personal peculiarity of the original assumers, without any consanguinity. It has taken various forms; as for example in the H.R. le Blend, le Blent, Blunt, le Blunte, le Blound, &c. It may be regarded as the Anglo-Norman synonym of our indigenous White; and some of the Irish Blunts have in recent times translated it into White. The Norwegian royal surname, Harfager, means ' fair-haired,' and in the H.R. we have a Flaxennehed.
See Blount. Robert and William Blundus were tenants in chief under the Conqueror. Domesd.
(Northen French) Of lair hair or complexion; from the French Blond. This family trace their origin to the Blondi or Brondi of Italy, so named from their fair complexion. They went into England with William the Conqueror.
Gervase, Fromund, Robert, Wymund Blundus of Normandy, 1180- 98 (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae). Gilbert and Robert Blundus (said to be of the family of the counts of Guisnes) held baronies in the Eastern Counties, 1086. There are frequent notices of the name, 12th cent., in Essex, Suffolk, Wilts, Notts, &c. In 1300 three families of Le Blund bore different arms, and were probably of different foreign origins. Hence derive the baronets Blount.
Blount: descriptive, le Blond, the fair-haired. Two named in Domesday, sons of the Sieur de Guisnes.
Blunt is an ancient English name that in the forms of Le Blunt and Le Blund was represented in this county, as well as in Norfolk, Lincolnshire, Oxfordshire, and Wiltshire, in the 13th century (H. R.). It is now also established in Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, and Rutlandshire.
