Blow Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from a nickname. Probably a sobriquet for the then common horn-blower. Lower's suggestion is impossible. He says, 'Blow— a contraction of Bellew, Bellow, which see. The parish in Norfolk popularly called Bio' Norton is really Norton-Bellear' (Patronymica Britannica). The simple answer to this is that in 1273 the name was commonly written Blower. Blow is the name, and Blow is what has to be explained. As Blower and Blowhorn, and Hornblower and Hornblow, were then familiar sobriquets, it is quite possible that Blow was a nickname.
