Blum Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

(Ger.) Bloom, Flower [Ger. blume, Middle High German bluome, O.H.Ger. bluoma]

Surnames of the United Kingdom (1912) by Henry Harrison

“Flower” in German (Blume). Derived from “Susannah”, Hebrew for Lily.

South African Surnames (1965) by Eric Rosenthal

(German) Flower.

Dictionary of American Family Names (1956) by Elsdon Coles Smith

(from the name of a female ancestor) or (from a house sign) Although some Blums come from the house sign in Frankfurt which depicted a flower, the vast majority of Blums derive their name from the feminine name Bluma. Although it is popularly accepted as coming from Blume (German for “flower”), Blum really is a garbled version of the Spanish Paloma, “dove.” Other extensions of this name are Blumenberg, Blumenfeld, Blumengarten, Blumenheim, Blumenkrantz, Blumenkrohn, Blumenreich, Blumenstein, Blumenstock, Blumenthal, Blumkin. Even though there are almost a dozen communities in Germany named Blumberg, the Jewish family name does not come from these locations but also from the extension of Blume. At the time names were assumed it was quite fashionable to make them long; this was considered more elegant and in good taste—hence the addition of -stein, -thal, -reich, -feld, -heim, etc. Today, our tastes are toward simpler and shorter forms.

— Rabbi Benzion Kaganoff
