A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

A Norman name common in England and Normandy in the twelfth century, from AN. blund, blond (med. Latin blundus), the "blonde." Not from Norse blundr, "sleepy," as sometimes explained (Zachrisson). Hugh de Abirbuthenoth, who gifted the church of Garuoch to the monastery of Arnbroath in 1292, was commonly designated Hugo Blundus or Le Blond, from the flaxen color of his hair (Sc. Peer., I, p. 274). Sometime before 1200 Rodbert Blundus witnessed a charier by Roger de Quenci (LSC., 36), and Adam Blundus witnessed a confirmation charter by the Chapter of Brechin c. 1212—18 (REB., II, p. 259). John Blund who witnessed a charter by Matilda, countess of Angus, c. 1242—48 (RAA., I, 49) is probably the John Blundus who appears as a charter witness in Brechin in 1267 (REB., I, 8). In 1296 a writ was issued to the sheriff of Edinburgh for behalf of John le Blund of Esseby (Bain, II, 832). About 1340 William Blundus witnessed a concession in favor of the monastery of Schon (Scon, 167). Geoffrey Blund was the first burgess of Inverness on record c. 1200 (Rec. Inti., I, p. Iv) and the name seems to have Continued there at least to the sixteenth century as Blunt.
