The index to Laing says Boog = Bog = Boig. Perhaps from Boak in the parish of Kirkcoim, although none of the references points in that direction. Weekley (p. 54) suggests Boag is probably a variant of boak, a northern form of balk, a ridge (as a boundary). Andrew Boog witnessed instrument of sasine, 1550 (Laing, 567). David Book, merchant in Edinburgh, 1610 (ibid., 1597), and Thomas Baok, merchant burgess of Stirling, 1622 (Laing, 1910). John Book in Thankertoun, 1626, James Book there, 1636, and William Boak there in 1629 (Lanark CR.), Janet Book in the parish of Cadder, 1629 (Campsie). Henry Boog in Reddoch, parish of Falkirk, 1643, and other four of the name (Stirling), and James Book, maltman in Falkirk, 1652 and three more (ibid.). Henry Buack, burgess of Dundee, 1664 (Brechin). The name was common in Edinburgh in the seventeenth century as Boog, and in Torphichen Commissariot Record the name occurs as Boik (1685), Boick (1688), Boack (1697), and Boag (1709), and William Boick was martyred for his religious belief in Glasgow, 1683. David Bock in Bankhead, parish of Morrowingside (= Muiravonside), 1685, and John Bock (otherwise Pock) was change keeper in Denny, 1793 (Stirling). Mr. John Boak, doctor of the Grammar School of Perth, 1666, probably was a relative of William Bouok, schoolmaster at Lundy, who was suspended from office "for his scandal in acting a comedie wherin he mad a mock of religious duties and ordinances" in 1668 (DPD., II, p. 225; I, p. 188). Alexander Boak, tanner, burgess of Edinburgh, 1786. The name early made its way to Orkney. Gilbert Boge, witness in Kirkwall, 1523, Magnus Book, juror on assize at Stenness, 1576, Joan Boak, juror there in 1595, and Robert Boak in Clowstane, a wliness, 1613 (OSR., I, p. 269,220, 278); George Book in Clouston, witness, 1605 (REO, p. 207,139, 170,177, 278).
