Boal Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Boal, sometimes spelt Boale, does not appear to be an independent surname but is rather a variant of two true surnames of very dissimilar origin, viz: the Irish Ó Baoighill (Boyle) and the English Bowles or Boles. Boal is almost exclusively found in Antrim and Down and in those counties it has been widely used as a synonym both of Boyle and Bowles. Bohill, found in Co. Down, is probably another anglicized form of Ó Baoighill; I think Woulfe's equation of it with the Gaelic O Baothghalaigh, a name mentioned by O'Dugan in his “Topographical Poem” among the Ulster septs, cannot be accepted: O'Donovan in his edition passes over the name without attempting to give it a modern equivalent.
Mainly found in Cos. Antrim and Down. Boal is there a synonym of the Gaelic-Irish Boyle (q.v.) also of the English name Boles or Bowles. SIF 19
