User-submitted Reference

A surname originating in Cornwall, UK and a derivation of the more common surname and place name Bodinnar.

The name's meaning is uncertain. Cornish historians Peter Pool and The Revd John Bannister both wrote that the name means 'a habitation on a hill', 'bod' (a home or dwelling), 'an arth' (a high place).

The Cornish place names Higher and Lower Bodinnar are located in Newbridge, to the north of Sancreed, in West Penwith.

The name Berdinner is first recorded in the parish records of Mawgan in Meneage, in Cornwall's Lizard peninsula, in the 1700s. Early records of the name show it was used interchangably with other spellings (including Bodinnar), of which there are several variations.

It is important to note that in the Cornish dialect the emphasis of this name is on the second syllable, rather than the first. Cornish surnames are often found to have several variations of spelling. These may look different, but sound similar.
