This surname is found around Coldingham, Berwickshire, and tradition there says the family is of French origin. It is, however, more probably of local origin. There is Bogg near Canonbie, Dumfriesshire, and another in Lanarkshire. Edward Bog, priest of the diocese of St. Andrews and notary public, 1505 (Bamff, p. 43). John Bog was retoured heir in lands of Burnhouss and Auchterstown, etc., in Berwickshire, 1546 (Retours, Berwick, 1), George Bog was master of the Queen's beer cellar and Alexander Bog jantor of the outer gate in 1563 (ER., XIX, p. 237). Nicolas Bog, witness in Glasgow, 1550 (Protocols, l), and another Nicolaus Bog was served heir to his father John Bog in a tenement in Roxburgh, 1576 (Retours, Roxburgh, 329). John Bog and James Bog were jurors on the trial of Barbara Napier in Edinburgh, 1591 (Scottish Papers, X, p. 522). John Boig was retoured in lands in the barony of Coldynghame, 1632 (Retours, Berwick, 183), and another John Boig in Turriff was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1607 (NSCM., I, p. 104). Hugh Boog, writer in Edinburgh, 1683 (Inquis., 6493), George Boog in Klinkhill of Blacklaw, 1713 (Dunkeld), and John Bogue of Prestonhaugh, 1790 (Lauder). There is also a place named Bog in Roxburghshire (Retours, 323) and another place of the name in Perth Retours (228,451, etc.). Boige 1681, Bwg 1658.
