These two forms appear to be synonymous, neither being confined to one of the two parts of the country in which the name is found. In the earliest official birth registrations Bogan was the more usual in north-west Ulster, Boggan or Boggin being the normal Co. Wexford form where a decade earlier Griffith's Valuation recorded no less than 39 householders called Boggan. In a map of Co. Donegal Prepared for me by the late Mr. J. C. MacDonag11, Bogan appears as well established in the eastern Part of the county. The Irish form is O Bogain, derived presumably from the adjective bog (soft).

Our Bogan ancestors came from Ireland (Donegal) in the late 1700s. Family lore says that the name was O'Boggan originally. In Ireland, my sister was told that Bogans were people who worked the bogs, hence the term 'bogan' used to me smelly.
