Version 5.

The word 'last name' is of Latin origin. In the Roman Empire, it denoted a community consisting of a family of masters and their slaves. It took another meaning in medieval Europe - by the surname they began to understand exclusively the family. The expression 'family members' was equivalent to the expression 'family members'. Exactly the same understanding of the term existed at first in Russia. Only by the 19th century did the word 'last name' in Russian acquire its second meaning, which has become official and basic today: 'hereditary family naming added to a personal name'. After the Christianization of Russia in 988, every Slav during the official baptism ceremony received from the priest a baptismal name that served only one purpose - to provide a person with a personal name. The baptismal names corresponded to the names of the saints and were, therefore, ordinary Christian names. The basis of the surname Bogdanov was the church name Bogdan. Often, the ancient Slavs added the name of the father to the name of a person, thereby indicating his belonging to a particular genus. This is due to the fact that there were relatively few baptismal names, and they were often repeated. The addition to the person's name in the form of an indication of his father helped solve the problem of identification. The surname Bogdanov is formed from the personal masculine name Bogdan. This name came to the Russian language from Bulgaria and is translated as 'given by God'. The patron saint of this name was the holy martyr Theodotus of Caesarea, who took the name Bogdan at baptism. In Russia, they believed that if you give the child the name of a saint or a great martyr, his life will be bright, good or difficult, because there is an invisible connection between the name and destiny of a person. Bogdan, eventually got the name Bogdanov.

Version 6

Bogdan (a diminutive form of Bozhko) is an Old Slavonic name used now, its meaning is 'given by God'. There are a lot of surnames with this root in Russia. In the list of the hundred most common surnames Bogdanov - in eighteenth place. Naturally, the 'relatives' of Bogdanov - Bogdanin, Bogdanovich, Bogdanovsky, Bogdashin, Bogdashkin, Bozhenko, Bozhko, Bozhkov, Bogun, Bogutsky, Bogush, Bogushevich - are Western Slavic variants. Bogusovy surnames are formed from the root of God, the meaning of which is quite clear: Bogolepov ('beautiful as a god'), Bogolyubov, Bogomolets, Bogomolov, Bogomyakov, Bogomaz, Bogoroditsky, Bogorodsky, Theological, Boguslavsky, Bogucharsky. Researchers believe that the surnames Bogorodsky and Bogoslovsky arose in seminary life: they are a kind of artificial surnames given to future clergy for special harmony.

Version 7

Bogdan is an intra-family name meaning 'a child given by God.' One of the most common surnames in Russia could be formed as a literal translation from the Greek name Theodote: it is curious that it exists in the form of Fedot and Fedor - these two names in Greek mean 'given by God' and 'gift of God'. So the Bogdanovs, Fedorovs and Fedotovs are namesakes. Among the 'godly' surnames are: Bogdanin, Bogdashkin (a derogatory form for commoners), Bogolepov (literally 'beautiful as a god'; there was also the church name Bogolep - the Greek equivalent of Theophenes), Bogolyubov, Bogomolov, Bogoroditsky and Bogorodsky, Theological, Epiphany. The last three names are seminary. The surname of Bozhkov is consonant. Of course, one can admit with a stretch that it was formed from the word god - the name of a miniature image of God or the name of minor deities in some mythological pantheon. However, most likely, the surname is based on the diminutive form of Bozhko from the name Bogdan - given by God (senior glory). This form was often found among Russians and Ukrainians in the 16th – 18th centuries. Bulgarians Bozhko has an independent, full masculine name. Bogdanov Andrey Ivanovich (1692-1766) - a book scholar. Bogdanov's manuscript 'A Brief Collection of Printed Books ...' (1755) - the first experience of a bibliographic code of the Russian book and the first history of Russian printing houses.
