As you know surnames often correspond with an occupation, for example Bowman (presumably a man who made bows). But Bowmer doesn't correspond with any occupations. My uncle thought that our name had probably been written down and spelled wrong at some point and that perhaps we originated from Eastern Europe (gypsies) and our name was originally Bohmer. I have no real research or evidence to offer other than this conversation with my great uncle who is now dead. I don't know where he got his information from unfortunately. But I don't mind being a romantic gypsy. My grandfather and great-grandfather in Kent seemed to have an affinity with water. They often worked in jobs on the River Medway in Kent.
