This name is common in Ayrshire, and six of the name are recorded in the Edinburgh Marriage Register from 1640. It has been suggested that the name is a variant of Bonar (Sc. Ant., IV, p. 114), but this is improbable. It may be from French le bon, 'the good.' A contemporary Scottish family of this name of remarkable genius is composed of Captain David Bone, of the Anchor Line, his brother James Bone, editor of the Manchester Guardian, Muirhead Bone the artist, Stephen Bone who did the mural paintings in the Piccadilly Circus Underground Station, and Freda Bone, daughter of Captain David Bone, who also is an artist. The name may be from Bohun, a place near Carentan, in France.
