Bonfanti Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

The Bonfanti surname is of French and Italian origin. The name was a given name, meaning 'descendant of Bonefede' - 'good and faithful man'. The first French hereditary surnames are found in the 12th century, at about the same time as in England, but they are not common form before the 13th century, and it was not until the 15th century that they stabilized to any great extent. Before then, a nickname would be transmitted by two or three generations, but then abandoned in favor of another. In the south, many French surnames came from Italy over the centuries, and in northern France, the Germanic influence can often be detected. After the Crusades in Europe, people began, perhaps unconsciously, to feel the need of a family name. The nobles and the upper classes, especially those who have joined the Crusades, observed the prestige and the practical value of an added name, and hastened to adopt surnames. At first, the coat of arms was a practical matter that served a function on the battlefield and in tournaments. With his helmet covering his face, and armor that surrounds the rider from head to toe, the only means of identification for his followers, was painted insignia on his shield, and embroidery in his armor, covering clothing and flowing used on armor. The first records of the name mention William Bonenfaunt, which was documented in the year 1302, and Walter Bonenfant appears in Cambridge in 1273. Henry Bonefant was documented in Buckinghamshire County, in the same year. Later cases include Philip Bonivant that was in the register church of St Dionis Backchurch, London, in 1631 Elizabeth, daughter of Edmond Bollifante was baptized in St. James, Clerkenwell, London, in 1637, and Frances, daughter of William Bullivant was baptized in St. Thomas the Apostle in London in 1674.
