(Anglo-French-Latin) lit. Good Man [Old French bonhom(m)e; Latin bonus, good, and homo, man: cp. Mod. French bonhomme, a simple, good-natured man]
Although no place so called appears in the topographical dictionaries, this would appear to be, like Bonby, Bonchurch, &c,, the name of some locality. There was, however, a religious order called bonhommes, or friars minors, from whom the name may have originated. Bonhomme occurs in the H.R. as a stationary surname.
Humphry and William Bonhomme occur in Cambridge c. 1272, R.H. The name is obviously foreign. One family may have derived its name from Bonham, Norfolk. Hence the Baronets Bonham.
