Bonifate Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

I was surprised to see that the last name that was given to my great great grandfather upon immigrating was actually most commonly found in Romania. He came from Italy, and my uncle believes that the name was changed at an immigration station from Bonifati or Bonifatti to Bonifate. He found evidence that actually links the family to the town of Bonifati, and feels like there could be a relation between a major family in that town to someone in our family in America. This is because he knows that our ancestors came from the Calabria region, where the town called Bonifati is found. He actually plans to travel to the region and research some more information on the topic to see if there really is a relation to the people in the town.
