This surname is most probably derived from the lands of Balnamoon in the parish of Menmuir in Angus, the local pronunciation of which is given as "Bonnymune." Duncan Bonyman was a mason at Dunkeld in 1514 (Rent. Dunk., p. 295), and George Bonyman was a merchant in Edinburgh in 1590 (Laing, 1203). John Bonyman appears as a juror in the regality of Spynie in 1597 (SCM., II, p. 141), Mr. George Bonyman was servitor to Mr. John Hay of Eister Kennet in 1626 (Fordell, p. 113), and John Balnamoon of Glasgow was released on signing a bond not to take up arms in 1679 (RPC., 3. ser. VI p. 296). W. Bonniman was a member of the Huntly Volunteers in 1798 (Will, p. 18).
