User-submitted Reference
Banta is a Dutch (more specifically, Frisian) family name. It originated when Epke Jacobse (the modern equivalent of Jacobson) arrived by ship in Long Island in 1659, with his five sons. Since Dutch surnames were patronymic, Epke needed a surname for life in the New World. He took the name Banta, after an estate near his home in Friesland. By the time Theodore Banta wrote his genealogy in 1893 (A Friesian Family, the Banta Genealogy), he counted 10,000 Banta descendants in the USA. The Bantas moved from Long Island to New Jersey, then Pennsylvania, Indiana, Kentucky, and Texas. Genealogy has been a favorite hobby of the family and the name origin is well documented.
