A surname now mainly confined to Fifeshire. Thomas Bunthorn, portioner of Lelethame in the parish of Monymaill in 1617 (St. Andrews). William Bunthorne was witness in Dysart in 1640 (PBK., p. 184), George Buntrone, smith in Edinburgh, is in record in 1644, and James Bontram was a tailor there in 1653 (Edinb. Marr.). Margaret Bontrone in Cottoune of Balfarge appears in 1671 (Dunblane), Joannes Bonthrone heir of John Bonthrone in Straemiglo in 1680 (Inquis. Gen., 6237), is doubtless John Bontron, baxter in Stramiglo in 1696 (Dunkeld). Alexander and Thomas Bonthrone of the parish of Forteviot were among the Scots killed in the first Great War.
