From the old lands of Booklawes near Melrose, Roxburghshire, spelled Bukelawis in 1606 (Retours, Roxburghshire, 43). Robert de Bucleso who witnessed a confirmation charter by Richard de Vmframuilla in favor of the Abbey of Kelso, c. 1220, is doubtless the first of the name recorded. John Bewclase, a trustworthy man, witnessed the testament of Alexander Hume of Dunglass in 1423 (HMC., 12 Rep., App. 8, p. 87), and John Bukles witnessed an instrument of sasine in Lothian in 1535 (Laing, 398). Letters of Slains were subscribed by Kathrine Bukles in 1589 (RPC., IV, p. 347), Agnes Buckles is recorded in the parish of Livingstone in 1675 (Torphichen), and John Bowglase in Overlaskeoch signed the Test in 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. X, p. 226). Other sixteenth century forms of the surname (all in Lothian) are Buccles (1539), Bukeles (1571), Buikles (1584 and 1603), Booklaws (1685). The name is also found in the Edinburgh Marriage Register as Bookies (1618) and Bugloss (1680). Other old forms are: Bucklijs, Buckijlis, Buklijs, Baukle, and Bwikles. James Buglass died in Edinburgh in 1940, and Jessie Buglass of Belhaven in same year.
