A surname of local origin from Balhousie in Fife, which appears in seventeenth-century record as Bowsie and Bousay, still the local pronunciation of the place name. The surname was mainly localized in Fife. 'Sir' John Bousie who claimed the chaplaincy of the Trinity of Dysart in 1566 (Dysart, p. 33) is probably the Sir John Bowsie who was "chargit to produce his richt of the chaplancie of Ouchtarogill" in 1580 (Soltre, p. 236), and the Sir John Bowsie, hospitaller and master of the Hospital of Holy Trinity, Edinburgh, in 1584 (ibid., p. 152). Thomas Bousa, witness in Brechin, 1556 (Laing, 648) may be Thomas Bowsye who was notary public in St. Andrews diocese in 1567 (Laing, 816), and David Bowsie was commissioner to parliament for Crail in 1579 (APS., III, p. 128a). William Bowsie, burgess of Crail, was deprived of the office of bailie in 1567 (RPC., I, p. 578), John Bowsy was a resident there in 1587 (RPC., IV, p. 244), Thomas Bowsie is recorded in Aithray in the parish of Logie in 1615 (Stirling), and Katharine Bousie in Athelstanford, 1688 (Torphichen).
