This surname is derived from an occupation. 'the boothman.' Found in Northumberland, and no doubt the Scottish bothie-man, a cottager. It is a well-known surname about Newcastle-on-Tyne. Rather curiously Bonnyman and Bootiman occur together in the South Shields Directory (1885-6). 'Bothieman, equivalent to English hind, and borrowed from the circumstance of hinds inhabiting bothies' (Jamieson). v. Boothman.
BUTHMAN: Perhaps 'one who held a booth.' The name is also found in the English Hundred Rolls, 1273. Huchoun Buthman was member of the Guild of Ayr, c. 1431 (Coll. AGAA., I, p. 228).
