Of local origin from one or more of the places of the name. There are localities named Borland or Boreland in Dumfriesshire, Galloway, Fife, and Perthshire. Bordland appears to have been equivalent to 'home-farm.' James Bordland witness in Ayrshire, 1513 (Ros, 56). Allan Bordlandes was a weaver in Edinburgh in 1609 (Edinb. Marr.). In the same record the name also appears as Borland, Bordland, Borelands. Marion Bordland in Righeid, parish of Lesmahago, is recorded in 1625 (Lanark CR.), Robert Borlan in Muirton of Balhousie, 1652 (Dunblane), and James Bordland in Edelwood, parish of Hamilton, 1661 (Campsie). Thomas Borlands was writer in Edinburgh, 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. X, p. 361), and Alexander Borland was a poetical friend of Tannahill.
