Boscastel is a locational surname derived from the Cornish place-name Boscastle in north Cornwall. The medieval name of the site was 'Bottreaux Castle', referring to the castle associated with the Bottreaux family.

The family name Bottreaux later appears in Cornwall in anglicised forms such as Bottrell, Battrell, Bartell, Barkle, and ultimately Bartle. As both the place-name and the family name were simplified in English records, this produced the modern forms Boscastle for the place and Bartle for the surname.

So Boscastel reflects the place-based form of the same historical naming process that produced Bartle as the family name, both rooted in the medieval Bottreaux and Bottrell forms.

In this sense, Boscastel and Bartle are linguistically connected through Bottreaux Castle and the Bottreaux family, even though one is a locational surname and the other is a family-name derivative.
