The Bostons of Gattonside are an old Border family, and their name appears in record as Boustoune and Bowstone. There is a town named Boston in Lincolnshire, but the Scottish name may be of local origin. Bernard Boustoun was one of the witnesses to a charter by Andrew, abbot of Melrose, 1540 (RRM., III, p. 225). Robert Boustoun, tailor in Edinburgh, 1603 (Laing, 1459), Janet Bowstoune in Pittincreiffe, parish of Couper, 1619 (St. Andrews), John Bowstoune in Mekill Govan, 1628 (Campsie), and Helen Boustoun in Smailholme 1634, (Lauder). Adam Bowstoune heir of Adam Bowstoune in Mauchlin, 1636 (Retours, Ayr, 789), Thomas Bowstoun, portioner of Galtounside (Gattonside), 1662 (RRM II, p. 29), and Robert Bowstone was examined for the Test in 1685 (RPC., 3. ser. XI, p. 434). Twelve of the name are recorded in the Edinburgh Marriage Register spelled Bowstein, Boustein, Bowstine, Boustain 1649, Boustoune 1652, Bowstain 1650, Bowsting 1643.
