From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

From the lordship of Bothwell in Lanarkshire. The place name is derived from a 'weyll' or fishpool in the Clyde, as pointed out by the late Dr. George Neilson (SHR., II, p. 319), William de Bothvile witnessed the grant by Bernard de Hauden to the House of Soltre, c. 1190—1220 (Soltre, p. 10). The Sigill. Ricardi de Boteville is appended to a document relating to fishings on the Tweed, 1250 (Seals Supp., 124). Roger de Bodevill was juror on an inquisition relating to the lands of Hopkelchoc (now Kailzie) in 1259 (Bain, I, 2162; APS,, I, p. 98 red). Richard de Botheuile was provost of Aberdeen in 1342 (ER., I, p. 180; REA., I, p. 72), and in 1346 a dispensation was granted to Patrick de Bothewill, clerk of the diocese of Glasgow (Pap. Lett., III, p. 113). Thomas de Bothwyl had a conveyance of land in the tenement of Denburn in 1347 (Friars, 15), and John de Bothuyle is recorded as a canon of Aberdeen in 1366 (REA., II, p. 58). The name is early found in Orkney, John of Boduel being recorded in a document drawn up at Kirkwall in 1369 (Diplontatarium Norvegicum, I, p. 308), Erasmus Bothwell in Whalsey is mentioned in 1576, also Bodwell, elder and younger in Houssetter Northmavine Shetland. Richard Bothwell was abbot of Dunfermline in 1449 (RD., 427) and, John Bodvell was fermorar in Aberdeen in 1697 (ROA., I, p. 246). Boduall 1617, Boithuile 1523, Boituile 1528, Boithwell 1592, Bothuile 1484, Bothvile 1435, Bothwill 1398.
