User-submitted Reference

Bottreaux is a Breton and Norman form of the Cornish surname later found as Bottrell, Battrell, Bartell, Barkle, and ultimately Bartle. In Cornwall this reflects the Armorican return, the close cultural and familial links between Cornwall and Brittany, rather than a simple Norman invasion model. The -eaux ending is a Breton and Norman-French scribal form that was later simplified in English records.

The place-name Boscastle in north Cornwall is historically derived from 'Bottreaux's Castle' or 'Bottrell's Castle', meaning the fortified site associated with the Bottreaux or Bottrell family. This anchors the name geographically as well as linguistically in Cornwall.

So Bottreaux represents an early Breton and Norman written form of a Cornish family name, later anglicised via the influence of Cornish dialect into the Bottrell and Bartle group, not a separate or foreign origin imposed from outside.
