Boven Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
Boven is a Dutch surname meaning 'above'. A Dutchman from the Groningen province took, or was given, Boven as his surname. From the distance of a few hundred years, the Bovens of today have had great laughs over who or what might have been 'above' another. Was Boven his nickname because he was so tall? Or did he live at the top of a hill? Well, since there are no hills in the Netherlands, we had to look elsewhere. And when we looked at some old maps from that time, we found Boven as part of two place-names in Groningen, where the name originated.
Before Napoleon came to power, the lowland countries of Europe followed very different naming conventions than those to which he was accustomed. So he decreed that the people of these nations should take surnames.
Von Boven is a separate surname, which is also Dutch in origin; it is not a variant or a derivative of Boven, having arisen independently.
