John Boye, alias Bowy, alias Boee, a Scotsman living at Yarmouth, had letters of denisation in England, 1481 (Bain, IV, 1471). John Bowey had remission for holding Dumbarton Castle against the king, 1489 (APS., XII, p. 34; Lennox, II, p. 132). Mariot Bowy appears in Edinburgh, c. 1523 (Soltre, p. 265), and Andrew Bowye was notary public in Scone, 1570 (Scon, p. 212). Hieronomy or Jerome Bowie or Bowy appears as master of the king's wine cellar, 1585—89 (RPC., IV, p. 24; ER., XXII, p. 31), and two years later William Bowie is mentioned as servitor in Edinburgh (Laing, 1212). William Bowie was notary in Lauder, 1606 (RRM., III, p. 370), and Elizabet Boway was charged with being a disorderly person (i.e. non-conforming) in the parish of Carsfern, 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. IX. p. 578). William Bowie was member of Gartly Company of Volunteers, 1798, and another William Bowie member of Drumblade Company, 1804 (Will). The name is very common in the Commissariat Records of Stirling and Dunblane in seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
