A family of the name lived in Alnwick for several centuries, and it is chiefly in Newcastle and South Northumb. that we find the surviving representatives. From the trade or occupation of bow-maker, a maker of bows, a bowyer. In 1343 there is entry of payment for wine for Gislinus boumaker (ER., I, p. 532). In 1376 John Bovmaker was bailie of Haddington (ER., II, p. 535), and in 1395 he was deputy of William Cockburn bailie of the same burgh (ibid., III, p. 364). In 1396 he appears again as John Bouman, which seems to point to Bower, Bowmaker, and Bowman being the same in meaning. Johannes Bomaker was rector of the parish church of Moncabio (i.e. Monyabroc, the old name of Kilsyth in the deanery of Lennox) in 1422 (Wyntoun, X, p. xxxvii, S.T.S. ed.). John Bowmakkare of Cardone gave sasine of half his lands of Cardon to Margaret Menzies in 1557, and in 1558 a commission was issued for the trial of John Bowmaker (ER., XIX, p. 423). The surname is also found in Edinburgh from 1620 (Edinb, Marr.), and George Bowmaker of Whitrig was on the War Committee of Berwick in 1648 (APS., VI pt. II, p. 33).
