From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

BOWSDEN: From Bowsden near Lowick, Northumberland, old spellings of which are Bollesdene (1228), Bollisdun (1239). R de Boilestunea witnessed gift of the church of the vill of Leuing to Holyrood, c. 1128 (LSC., p. 11). Radulphus de Boiliston witnessed a charter by Richard, bishop of St. Andrews, c. 1170 (Scon, p. 30). The seals of Tomas de Bollesdune and of Radulph Bollesdune are appended to an agreement regarding fishings on the Tweed, 1250 (Seals Supp., 112,113). The seal of Tome de Bolesdvne is also appended to a confirmation of lands at Bollesden to St. Cuthbert at Durham, and also in the thirteenth century we have a charter by Agnes "filia Margrete de Bollesden" of lands of Bollesden to St. Cuthbert at Durham (ibid., 110,111).
