Boyne Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Woulfe gives Mac Baoithin and Ó Baoithín as the Irish forms of Boyne and equates the latter with Ó Baodháin * of Badhna in Co. Roscommon. MacBoyheen is listed in the “census” of 1659 as a principal Irish name in the baronies of Dromahare and Rosclogher, Co. Leitrim, and there can be no doubt that this is an anglicized form of MacBaoithin; it is probable, too, that Boyhan, found in Co. Westmeath in the eighteenth century, is a later variant of that name. I have, however, found no evidence that this became Boyne. None of the references to the name Boyne which I have met relate to Co. Roscommon or Co. Leitrim and only one of the province of Connacht (viz. a monument in the Dominican church at Athenry, dated 1697): all the rest, from John Boyn, who was outlawed in Co. Kildare in 1297, to the birth registrations of the last century, relate to Leinster, mainly the counties near Dublin.
1 Dweller by the River Boyne, called by Ptolemy Búvinda = Old Irish Bó-find, ‘ White Cow.' 2 a variant of Bown(e, q.v.
Possibly a modern form of Mac Baoithin, formerly MacBoyheen (Co. Leitrim). SIF 21
An ancient thanedom of Scotland, which included Banff. Gaz. Scotl.
