Andrew Boytour was a monk of the monastery of Balmorinach (Balmerino) in 1518, and David Boytour was tenant of the same house in the same year (SCBF., p. 103) Alexander Boyture was enrolled burgess of Dundee, 1553 (Wedd., p. 133), David Boittour recorded at Flisk, 1550 (St. Andrews). James Boytour admitted burgess in 1594 is probably the James Boyter, auditor of Dundee, 1617 (Wedd., p. 279), and father of Thomas Boytour of Pilmor, merchant, admitted burgess in 1626. James Boyter, elder of Neithercliff in Angus, gave a bond of caution in 1627 (RPC., 2. ser. II, p. 71). James Boyter, burgess of Dundee, 1643, and six more of the name are recorded in Brechin Commissariot Record. The editor of the Compt buik of David Wedderburne says (p. 76) this name is of French origin. Boytar 1654, Boytoir 1584, Boytor 1616, Bytor 1594.
