Boyton Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Woulfe's statements in connexion with this name need further consideration. So far as the Tipperary Boytons are concerned he is quite correct in saying that they have been there since the thirteenth century and that their name is derived from an English village. In another place he asserts that O'Donovan was wrong in his belief that the name comes from the Gaelic Ó Baodháin (in fact the name in the Annals and other early Irish texts is Ó Baedáin). In my opinion they are both right. The de Boytons of Munster were already well established near Cashel before 1300 since they had given their name to the place names Boytonrath and Boytonstown by 1307. The first reference I have found to them is to a Richard de Boyton, successful plaintiff in a law case in 1297 at Cashel. From that time on there are many references to them in mediaeval documents and they were continuously associated with that part of the country until comparatively recent times. I may mention that their arms are displayed in Cashel Cathedral.
Since the Reformation, however, not all these Boytons were Protestants: Father William Boyton S1. was martyred for the faith at Cashel in 1647, and Patrick Boyton of Thomastown, Co. Tipperary, was among the transplanted Papists of 1657.
The Gaelic records bring the Boytons of Connacht back even further than their Norman namesakes. Probably Woulfe did not realize how closely the name is associated with that part of the country in or near Co".Roscommon when he disputed O'Donovan's opinion, which, it must be remembered, did not specifically refer to the Munster Boytons. The Annals of Loch Cé record the death of Sanctus Mauricius O'Baedan in 1199. This name occurs occasionally e.g. in the Tribes and Customs of Hy Many but the Connacht Boytons were not very prominent. One appears in the “census” of 1659-60as titulado In the parish of Clooncraffe, Co. Roscommon, and another of the same place was an officer of Clifford's Dragoons in James II's Irish army, though he does not appear in the lists of persons outlawed for that activity.
The name has now become rare but is still extant in the north-western part of the country.
James W. Boyton M.D. was the author of a work entitled An Authentic Narrative (1789) which gives an account of the cause célébre of Mary Neal.
