This surname is derived from an occupation. 'the brace-girdler,' abbrev. to bracegirdle. It is somewhat hard to define this occupation. If it refers to 'braces,' they are an earlier institution than is generally imagined. If it be a corruption of 'breek-girdle' (Maundeville speaks of a 'breekgirdle' in his Travels.), then the difficulty is cleared up. In Memories of London (Riley) mention is made of one John le Bregerdelere, and this strengthens the latter supposition (v. Brailer). The breeches girdle would be a waistband. [In the Preston Guild Rolls, under date 1560, occurs 'William Harryson, brekemaker' (p. 39); and twenty years later 'John Sudell, breeckman'. These may refer to brickmaking or bricklaying.)

This singular name was taken from an article of the bearer's costume, called a bracing-girdle, a kind of belt Huloet has" Bracynge gyrdle, sub-cingulum." Halliwell.
The Bracegirdles were an old Cheadle family, one of the members being rector of Billing, Northamptonshire, in the reign of Elizabeth; in 1749, Thomas Bracegirdle was a Cheadle churchwarden (E.). The name is at present most at home in the Knutsford district, but is still to be found in Cheadle.
